Non-Destructive Elemental Analysis of High-Value Artifacts With Micro-XRF
نویسندگان
چکیده
Analysis of inorganic elements in archaeological artifacts is commonly used to determine vital properties of the item, such as where, when, and how it was made. Micro X-ray Fluorescence (microXRF) is a non-destructive technique that can provide qualitative, quantitative, and distributional information from the sample, with minimal sample preparation. With potentially high-value artifacts, this is extremely beneficial and important in maintaining the integrity of the sample.

Micro-XRF analysis provides us with elemental maps, which are very useful for understanding the samples under test. Usually, scanning-type elemental mapping is performed. That means, a sample stage is scanned to a fixed X-ray micro beam. XRF analysis is performed at the scanned points, leading to 2D elemental mapping. One of the drawbacks of this technique is the long acquisition time depending...

Micro-XRF is a significant tool for the analysis of small regions. A micro-X-ray beam can be created in the laboratory by various focusing X-ray optics. Previously, nondestructive 3D-XRF analysis had not been easy because of the high penetration of fluorescent X-rays emitted into the sample. A recently developed confocal micro-XRF technique combined with polycapillary X-ray lenses enables depth...

Calcium and potassium are essential for cell signaling, ion homeostasis and cell wall strength in plants. Unlike nutrients such as nitrogen and potassium, calcium is immobile in plants. Localized calcium deficiencies result in agricultural losses; particularly for fleshy horticultural crops in which elemental imbalances in fruit contribute to the development of physiological disorders such as b...

Micro-X-ray fluorescence (micro-XRF) analysis is a promising method for determining elemental distributions of small regions. Moreover, a recent trend in micro-XRF is 3D elemental analysis by using confocal micro-XRF instruments combined with two polycapillary x-ray lenses. Our research group has been developed confocal micro-XRF instruments by using polycapillary x-ray lenses, and its spatial ...
متن کاملApplications of X-ray Fluorescence-pattern Recognition in Forensic Archaeometry and Archaeomaterials Analyses
Introduction Archaeochemists are called on to analyze a wide variety of samples, ranging from metals, pigments, and glasses to bones, stones, and soils. In most cases these samples are solids. Although non-destructive and/or micro-sample analyses are preferable for these cultural resources, in many cases there is a large amount of material available for analysis. In those instances where non-de...
